That was the year that was

Here is what’s fascinating about the Bergen County beat. It stays interesting right up through the last minute of the last meeting of the year.

This year certainly ended in dramatic fashion Friday with the freeholders voting 4-3 to reject a proposal for the County Police to patrol Demarest.

There were other interesting developments as well. Earlier in the week, I reported that county officials are considering a plan to make the 911 dispatch center in Mahwah available to all 70 towns at no extra charge.

Currently 20 towns have their 911 calls go through the center, including 11 that use the dispatch service as well. County officials hope to offset the loss of about $1 million in fees each year from those towns by seeking a share of the state 911 funds paid by telephone users.

Speaking of 911, this week also marked the retirement of Bergen County Police Lt. Dwane Razzetti, who is stepping down after 26 years in law enforcement, including 20 years with the Office of Emergency Management. Click here to listen to my interview with Razzetti.

Quote of the week:

“Unfortunately, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth,”

-Demarest Mayor Raymond Cywinski after nine months of negotiations ended with the freeholder’s rejection of a contract for the County Police to patrol the borough.
